Art Journaling: The Basics

Are you curious about Art Journaling?  Thought it was only for “Artists”? Or maybe you’ve heard of it before, but don’t know how to start.

Art Journaling goes beyond traditional diaries and journals to include not only words, but images and color to express your thoughts, feelings and emotions.  Art Journaling is all about creative PLAY!  The process has no set outcomes and no rules, so there are no mistakes and no judgments.  It is a fun, creative means of self expression for everyone of all ages since it requires no artistic skills or talent!

This class provides an overview of some of the most common Art Journaling techniques and materials.  The process begins by laying down color and texture on our pages using paints, pens, crayons, gelatos, markers, pastels, stamps, stencils, doodles, collage and more!  You’ll continue to layer words, images, colors and textures until you have created several personally unique, visually complex and meaningful pages for your Art Journal.  Along the way, we will discuss different styles of journaling; how to stay inspired; and the benefits, challenges and approaches to regular Art Journaling.

You’ll go home with completed and in-progress journal pages as well as blank mixed media and watercolor papers to create additional pages.   Also, there will be several types and styles of journals available for you to examine before you buy one for yourself.
